Frequently Asked Questions
What do dermatologists do?
Dermatologists treat over 3,000 conditions of the skin, hair, and nails. Many common conditions affecting these areas like acne, nail infections, or hair loss, only need a visual inspection to be diagnosed.
Our online dermatologists in Canada can also provide prescriptions through the Maple app, including online acne prescriptions. Prescriptions are given at the doctor’s discretion and can be picked up at your local pharmacy or delivered to your door at no additional cost.
When requesting a dermatologist appointment on Maple, simply fill in your symptoms and attach any images you feel are needed. Your request will be securely sent to a Canadian-licensed dermatologist for review and you’ll hear back with a diagnosis and treatment plan within 24 hours. If the dermatologist can’t help, your consultation won’t start and you won’t be charged.
What should I expect during my consultation?
Once you enter your symptoms and attach the required images, your request will be securely sent to a Canadian-licensed dermatologist for review. Your file will be reviewed in 24 hours and the dermatologist will ask any follow-up questions needed to develop a diagnosis and treatment plan over secure text messaging. If the dermatologist can’t help, your consultation won’t start and you won’t be charged.
Why do I need a Primary Care Membership first?
Specialist care codes on Maple function as add-ons. You must have an active Maple Primary Care account/membership for the specialist consultation credit to be applied.
What do dermatologists treat?
Dermatologists treat conditions of the skin, hair, and nails including but not limited to:
- Acne — a common inflammatory disorder of the skin. Severe cases of acne that result in painful nodules under the skin are called cystic acne.
- Alopecia — an autoimmune condition that attacks hair follicles and causes hair loss. Hair usually falls out in clumps, about the size and shape of a quarter.
- Psoriasis — an autoimmune disease brought on by the immune system attacking healthy skin cells. There are many types of psoriasis — each one affects a different area of the body and has a unique appearance and symptoms.
- Rashes — areas of itchy, irritated, or swollen skin that can appear anywhere on the body. Some develop right away while others can form over several days. Some rashes may also require long-term treatment.
- Eczema — an inflammatory skin condition that causes the skin to become inflamed, itchy, or develop a rash-like appearance. People with eczema tend to have an overactive immune system that responds to topical irritants or allergens by producing inflammation.
- Rosacea — a skin condition that causes flushing, sensitive skin, and redness, usually to the middle of the face. Rosacea can be chronic or flare up for a certain period of time.
- Nail infections — bacterial or fungal infections on, around, or underneath the fingernails or toenails. Bacterial infections usually have a red, swollen appearance, and there may also be a pus-filled blister. Fungal infections typically cause a thickening of the nail, discolouration, and crumbling edges.
- Contact dermatitis — an itchy rash caused by direct contact with a substance — anything from soaps to cosmetics to jewelry — that triggers irritation or an allergic reaction.
- Pigment disorders — skin conditions as a result of changes to skin colouring. Pigment disorders include vitiligo, birthmarks, melasma, hyperpigmentation, and more.
- Shingles — a viral infection that causes a painful, blistering rash. The rash usually appears on one side of the face or body.
Do you need a referral to see a dermatologist?
You can use Maple to see a dermatologist without a referral. For an in-person dermatologist appointment, you need a referral from a general practitioner or primary care physician to see a dermatologist.
What is mole mapping and should I get it done?
Mole mapping uses high-resolution photography and state-of-the-art software to create an image database of all your body moles. It’s highly accurate and allows a comparison of your moles over time to identify moles that are new or changing early. Scans are carried out by experienced technicians who are highly trained in operating the system.
You should get mole mapping if:
- You have multiple moles (more than 50)
- You have large or irregular-looking moles
- You’ve noticed any new moles or changes in your moles
- You have very light skin or red hair
- You have a personal or family history of skin cancer, especially melanoma
- You have sunburns from childhood or you’ve used tanning beds
- You take immunosuppressive medication
Make sure to have your moles checked yearly by a physician and consider mole mapping.
What's the difference between seeing a skincare specialist and a dermatology consultation?
A skincare specialist is a physician with expertise in treating certain skin conditions such as large pores, blackheads, wrinkles, dark spots, sun damage, and more.
A dermatologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of skin, scalp, hair, and nail conditions such as acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, hair loss, suspicious moles, nail disorders, and more.
How do I get a prescription?
The dermatologist will review your request and provide a diagnosis and treatment plan within 24 hours. If your treatment plan involves a prescription, it’ll be sent to you through the Maple app. From there, you can take your prescription to any pharmacy or have it delivered right to your door at no additional cost.
What kind of medication can be prescribed by a dermatologist?
Our dermatologists can prescribe the same medications online as they would during an in-person consultation. These include Accutane (isotretinoin), Vistaril (hydroxyzine), corticosteroid cream and ointments, calcineurin inhibitors, retinoids, antibiotics, and more. The dermatologist’s prescription will be sent to you in the Maple app, which you can take to any pharmacy or have delivered to your door for free.
